A non-profit organization founded by Dr Spelman in 2015. She currently serves as Executive Director.

Mission: We bring artists, creative writers, and scientists together to foster informed and sustained support for animal conservation. We believe that art informed by science has the power to direct our attention to the ongoing loss of species and what we can do about it.

Plan: We believe that art informed by science has the power to direct our attention to the ongoing loss of species and what we can do about it..

Programs: Our programs (exhibits & events, field studies, network growth, scholarships, and workshops) are open to creatives from anywhere in the world and from all backgrounds.

Vision: Everyone works together to study, celebrate, and protect — to conserve — animals and their habitats.

Strategy: We (re)connect art and science, and encourage art/sci collaboration to improve conservation outcomes.

Motivation: Our inspiration is both the ongoing loss of biodiversity and the evidence that conservation works when it is collaborative, community-based, cross-disciplinary, and, inclusive. But we need to do more. Science tells us most animals will not survive our massive presence on earth unless we intervene.

Goals:

  • Give artists interested in science the opportunity to research and respond to the problems facing animals today.

  • Give scientists working in conservation the opportunity to explore the artistic, humanistic, and emotional side of their work.

  • Inspire collaboration among artists and scientists working with animals.

  • Inspire conservation action by bringing artists and scientists together to save species.

  • Demonstrate that conservation is something we can all do.

  • Follow best practices for non-profit boards.

I started Creature Conserve because I saw the need for a fresh approach to tackling the extinction crisis, one that was more open and engaging, collaborative and cross-disciplinary. Participants in our programs (exhibits, scholarships, workshops) learn from each other, create and innovate together, and combine their skills to improve conservation outcomes and reach a wider audience.
