Q: I am not a vet, nor do I have any medical training other than general first aid. But I love animals and have the greatest admiration for the work that you and your fellow veterinarians do because of the compassion you have for your patients and your efforts to help the rest of us learn more about understand better the amazing creatures we share this planet with. What's the best way for someone like me to get involved in helping with animals and specifically learn more about animal behavior?
A: I would start by observing what's around you - the animals in the city or park where you live; visit the local sanctuary or zoo. Maybe then decide which group of creatures interests you the most - birds, mammals, fishes. Next read as much as you can. Go on Amazon or to a bookstore or library and do a search. There are so many good books out there. Or go on Google and look on the web. There are also lots of great nature videos. Overall, the best way to learn is to spend time with animals in any setting that works best for you, and start simple by focusing on a few animals so you can really dig deeper and learn about their behavior. Enjoy!
