Q: I am currently applying for veterinary schools. Are there any that you would recommend that are leading the way in wildlife medicine?
A: This is a good question in that it helps to have access to wildlife medicine training while in school, but it's also essential to first learn dog, cat, horse, cow, poultry, and fish farming. The medicine for these animals is the basis of what you need to know for wild animals. So the main thing is to do your very best in vet school whereever you go. You'll have opportunities to gain experience in wildlife medicine during your externNship rotations or your summer breaks, depending on what you do with them.
The schools I think about with respect to wildlife medicine expertise include UC Davis, U of Florida/Gainsville, Cornell, NC State, and Texas A & M.
Good luck and thanks for asking!
